I discovered Homespun Soap when I started making gift baskets as they are well known and well-loved in the gift basket industry. They are perfectly suited for gift baskets by the size of the products, the coordinated sets of lotion, soap, bath salts, and tub teas, variety of fragrance, and beautiful label design. As if that wasn’t enough to sell me on the product, I was particularly drawn to their all natural ingredients and the fact that they are made in America.

Homespun Soap award winning, all natural products for bath include products for women, men and babies. Their fragrances and label designs included themes for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, winter, among others. 

Corinne Simpson is the founder of Homespun Soap and I recently interviewed her about her business and personal story that led to the creation of Homespun Soap.

How long have you been in business?

We started our business in 1995 in beautiful Custer, South Dakota.

How did your business get started?

I have severe chemical sensitivities. After three years of being hooked up to an oxygen tank, unable to leave my home in Aurora, IL, the doctors said: "Move or die." We managed to move to Custer in the pristine Black Hills of South Dakota. The clean air there saved my life. But I still needed safe products to use for personal grooming. I started by making my own natural soaps and eventually branched out into lotions, bath salts and other needed products. I found I could use natural plant essential oils for aromatherapy and skin benefits. My husband started selling the products to local gift shops and within two years we were chosen to appear on QVC Television as one of the representative best products for our state. In a short time, gift basket makers found us online. I learned much from them and eventually designed an entire line of products in 16 different collections which are affordable for small businesses and look great in gift baskets or in gift shops.

Why are you passionate about your product?

As you can imagine, I need our products. It is still difficult to find all natural products that are safe for me to use. I've spent years researching and developing recipes for all our products. Yes, we make them all by hand. We use a myriad of natural oils including coconut, almond and jojoba. We also use natural plant oils for fragrancing such as lavender, sweet orange, peppermint and many more. All of them are used, not only for their beautiful fragrances, but for their skin care and aroma therapeutic qualities. I understand the needs of small businesses, as we are one ourselves. So we have no minimum orders, no case amounts, no dollar amounts. This makes it easy for small businesses who may have trouble meeting some companies minimum order requirements. We make natural products for men, women and babies, for special occasions, a collection with foot care products and more.
